What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0 (Web3 or the third generation web) is a term that often refers to the evolving next-generation web infrastructure based on blockchain technology. Blockchain is the foundation of Bitcoin but it can also be applied to many disruptive applications in the real economy sectors.

A broader view of Web 3.0 also encompasses a fusion of other cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mixed Reality (Virtual and Augmented Reality or VR/AR). Web 3.0 is expected to succeed the current Web 2.0 (also known as the Social and Mobile Web) and the earlier Web 1.0 (the original World Wide Web). For more information, please see our Beginner-friendly introduction to Web 3.0.

What is the inWeb3 platform?

inWeb3 offers educational content that helps you demystify the emerging social technological trend towards Web 3.0, regardless of which industry you are from. We are also building a platform connecting like-minded entrepreneurs and professionals to capture exponential growth opportunities surrounding the Web 3.0 megatrend early - ahead of the crowd, but safe - beyond the hype.

Why is inWeb3 created?

Riding a social technological megatrend early could be life-changing. The companies that best captured the Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 trends have enjoyed exceptional growth and returns. By 2021, Amazon has produced a 175,000% return since its 1997 IPO, Google at 6,000% return since its 2004 IPO, and Facebook at 930% return since its 2012 IPO. An unconventional example related to Web 3.0 is Bitcoin. Back in 2012 when Brian Amstrong founded the now largest US crypto exchange Coinbase, Bitcoin was trading at around $5~$6. Bitcoin's price briefly exceeded $60K in April 2021, representing an over 1,000,000% increase from 2012. Meanwhile, Coinbase's valuation hits nearly $100B during its IPO top in the same month.

Many people miss the most rewarding early phase of a megatrend because they are either unaware of or do not understand it. Other people seize it but are forced out at the end of the inevitable early hype, without being able to catch the sustainable growth. One notable example obviously happened at the turn of the new millennium. The year 2000 witnessed the historical dot com bubble burst before Web 2.0 really exploded in the ensuing two decades. Bitcoin's journey is even more dramatic. Its last major bull run in 2017 brings the name of the famous cryptocurrency to the mass for the first time, only to see its price crashing from the then $20K-high to $3K-low just a year after. It then enjoyed another bull run reaching $60K in April 2021 and has since dropped about 40% fighting in a $35K territory as of this writing in June 2021.

Although none of us knows who will be the FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google) companies of the Web 3.0 era, by consciously understand the technologies early and see through their hypes, we ought to have a better chance of grabbing the most rewarding opportunities when they actually arrive. As people often quote:

“In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.”‌‌ ― Desiderius Erasmus

So what are the technologies driving the Web 3.0 megatrend? What could be the upcoming opportunities they bring? How to best capture those opportunities? These are the questions we create the inWeb3 platform to help answer - together with you!

For whom is inWeb3 created?

Since Web 3.0 is a social technological megatrend that is affecting every sector of society, just like what the past two generations of Webs have done to us, we build inWeb3 for people interested in this megatrend, regardless of their professional domain or career role.

You could be in business, engineering, education, healthcare, arts, etc.; you could be an entrepreneur, domain expert, policymaker, student, etc. The point is that even if your work has nothing to do with the Web, per se, if you see the upcoming tide of Web 3.0 clearer and ahead of your peers, you will naturally be leading the transition in your field as it actually happens. Once you are prepared and the timing is right, you may decide to ride the exponential growth by either actively entering the industry, e.g., founding companies or joining professions in that sector; or passively investing an appropriate portion of your portfolio in these disruptive areas.

We have three core differentiators.

1. We focus more on Web 3.0 for the real economy sectors than the pure financial sector

Our focus is on the integration of Web 3.0 with the real economy. That said, we do cover the most prominent Web 3.0 use cases in the financial domain such as Decentralized Finance (DeFi) as well. That is because many real economy applications do have deep links with the financial domain. Understanding how Web 3.0 disrupts finance could well inspire interesting cross-domain applications in the real economy.

Our emphasis on Web 3.0 for the real economy is purposely in line with our stress on minimizing risks and paying more attention to fundamentals rather than speculation. It also matches perfectly with our goal to serve people of all different backgrounds, because they are the real forces to become the change leader of the real economy in the Web 3.0 era.

2. We look beyond the hype, rather than chasing it; we emphasize being safe along with being early in the trend

There are lots of websites that already serve the latest themes in Web 3.0. For instance, the hottest topics surrounding blockchain as of June 2021 include "Decentralized Finance (DeFi)" and "Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT)". While many of these sites are pretty good at tracking the everyday development news, they are more suitable for the small group of very active early adopters, who are also bearing very high risks at this stage of those fields.

inWeb3 is not a platform that duplicates news about the latest released DeFi applications or daily price fluctuations of the hottest crypto tokens (which we believe is overwhelming for most people). Instead, we closely monitor those fields, consolidate relevant information and present them from a more systematic perspective, to help you better understand what is behind all those hypes. When appropriate, we also try to share our takes on how to participate in these areas with a minimized risk profile. In other words, we still want to be early, but on the safe side.

3. We are an educational and professional platform different from a general newsletter

With our founder's unique background combining solid technical expertise, business knowledge, and community leadership, we aim to build an educational and professional platform for the community.

On the educational side, we provide periodic educational content. Thanks to our deep technological roots, we choose topics less from a spontaneous newsworthy perspective, more from a technological and fundamental perspective. Our contents grouped together should look more like a constantly updated curriculum that helps you gain systematic knowledge of this field over time, rather than a time series of news reports. We strive to format our content to be consumable by a domain-agnostic community so that you do not have to possess a technical background to get started reading them. But we also provide curated resources and references on the most important topics for people who indeed want to dive deeper.

On the professional side, we are building various Web 3.0 powered infrastructures to facilitate community interactions, such as online and in-person forums, meetups, and conferences. We connect people with professional development and career opportunities related to the Web 3.0 industry. We will also provide incubation resources to entrepreneurs and domain experts, helping them launch projects to disrupt their respective domains in the Web 3.0 era.

What inWeb3 is NOT?

We are not financial advisors and do not offer investment advice. We are not "a website tracking Bitcoin or altcoins price fluctuation" for cryptocurrency speculations. We share our knowledge for educational purposes to help you better analyze the fundamentals behind opportunities in the new era.
